Occasionally, I come across a vintage bath that is so compelling I like to post a single image. In this bath for Barbara Hutton, I loved the choice of book matched marble with just the right amount of activity on the surface, the contrasting color scheme, the classical ornamentation on the soffit over the tub and the brass tub fittings. Great design choices never go out of style.

It is spring, at last. The season always inspires me to check my medicine cabinet and towel storage for all the detritus that has accumulated since my last overhaul.

We all know and love John Derian for his outstanding tromp l’oil objects from trays to paper weights and dishes. Recently we had a peek into his new loft in New York published in T Magazine. He refers to the work done in his space as the the non-renovation renovation. He said the changes he made were  a series of small tweaks. His goal was to preserve and revere the spirit of the artists and garment works who were his predecessors in this loft. He remarked that the work that has been undertaken is merely an exceedingly subtle face-lift. Preserving the old floor boards and patched tin ceiling, matching new walls to the old will keep the spirit of the place alive.

A bath with a masculine orientation is more about grooming than primping. There will not be any dressing tables, fluffy rugs or soft colors and trays of cosmetics.  I imagine a man’s bath will use rich polished wood for furniture or decorative accessories, dark colors from gray to brown and beautifully figured or textured stone.
