Great Color in the Bath

There is so much to like about this bath. The sink is installed on beautifully shaped metal legs with integral towel bars instead of the usual pedestal. This gives the ceramic basin a lightness that is proportionate for the narrow space. The mirrored back wall adds depth which appears to increase the size of the room. Natural light is a huge bonus and the tailored Roman shade is just the right treatment for the door; a linen fabric with a narrow stripe accentuates the verticality of the room. Brass shelves are an inspired touch, adding the idea of mixed finishes. They are practical as well, providing a place to display beautiful collections of objects and storage for elegant monogrammed towels.

Bamboo-motif Wallpaper

For those of you who have been following my Friday blogs, this highly decorative bath is an unusual post. I like this very personal statement by the designer and client who were not afraid of pattern or color. The active design of the wallpaper (Zuber 1960′s) is in contrast to the simplicity of the old dark wood  herringbone floor and low wood wainscot painted an Adamesque blue.  Small personal objects adorn the beautiful marble fireplace mantle and the chair indicates a bath where visiting and conversation are encouraged.

Travels: Marrakech

At the La Mamounia Hotel a beautiful and restrained installation of Zellig in two colors. It is sophisticated and very graphic.
An example of the countless small pieces of tile that make up a pattern. This mixing and matching of colors seems so right in the Moroccan environment.

This is not a particularly good image, but these are the graves of less nobles.
The tile used mostly for interiors to frame doorways, indoor pools or fountains.
This photograph of baskets of beads is an example of the role of color in the production of tile and other decorative arts in Marrakech.

I thought I would write this post as soon as I returned home. In retrospect, I am am happy to have had the time to think about my trip (certainly on my bucket list of places to go and things to see), the intensity of the place situated on the edge of the Sahara desert, the ancient medina with its snake charmers, the saturated colors and the architecture influenced by a complex history.

Ancient Mosaics

A magnificent architectural relic.
A grand scale doorway with a beautiful and detailed carved pediment.
An ariel view of the Terrace Houses with an open courtyard and countless frescoes on the walls.
We often talk about "continuous" corners. Here is an ancient example.
A complicated mosaic graphic pattern with great colors for accent.
A classic pattern in black and cream. A similar pattern is in the Waldorf Hotel--another example of what's old is new again.
More detailed figurative medallions with elegant borders. These are surely the work of fine artisans.

The incredible library.

Several years ago we had an amazing trip to Turkey that included a visit to the majestic 5,000 year old archaeological site at Ephesus. The architectural relics are extraordinary. But for me, personally, I thought I had gone to mosaic heaven.
