We all know and love John Derian for his outstanding tromp l’oil objects from trays to paper weights and dishes. Recently we had a peek into his new loft in New York published in T Magazine. He refers to the work done in his space as the the non-renovation renovation. He said the changes he made were  a series of small tweaks. His goal was to preserve and revere the spirit of the artists and garment works who were his predecessors in this loft. He remarked that the work that has been undertaken is merely an exceedingly subtle face-lift. Preserving the old floor boards and patched tin ceiling, matching new walls to the old will keep the spirit of the place alive.

There is so much to like about this bath. The sink is installed on beautifully shaped metal legs with integral towel bars instead of the usual pedestal. This gives the ceramic basin a lightness that is proportionate for the narrow space. The mirrored back wall adds depth which appears to increase the size of the room. Natural light is a huge bonus and the tailored Roman shade is just the right treatment for the door; a linen fabric with a narrow stripe accentuates the verticality of the room. Brass shelves are an inspired touch, adding the idea of mixed finishes. They are practical as well, providing a place to display beautiful collections of objects and storage for elegant monogrammed towels.

The details of this bath, published in the October issue of Elle Decor, are fabulous. It starts with sculpture; the bathtub is set in front of an appropriately scaled dark wood fireplace original to the house. The mantle holds an assortment of personal objects and the painting above is not only interesting but a great size for the wall. Clearly, the space is large and the ceilings tall, always a great feature for a master bath. In this space, it is the combination of a grand hanging light, large scale pattern on the roman shade, wood floors and just the right furniture that make it so appealing.  Finally, natural light adds ambient warmth and an invitation to relax.  Not seen in this photo are highly decorative demi-lune tables for sinks and unusual sconces.

When planning a master bath or one for the ‘kids’ or guests, it is logical to want built in cabinetry, often similar to that used in the kitchen. It provides a counter top and storage for towels, toiletries and other bath sundries. However, I would like to make a case for bath furniture rather than another set of cabinets or boxes with doors.
