Stone Fireplace

This is a wonderful room for many reasons, but I have focused specifically on the fireplace. Rarely do I see a fireplace using directional stone and one that is so bold. The gray and white marble, called Zephyr, is quarried in Turkey. Rather than just face the firebox with a ubiquitous stone, this installation shows how slabs have been layered for a simple but architectural installation. The fireplace, along with the modern furniture, choice of paint and objects makes this focal point of the space well integrated into a holistic design.

Thomas Jayne: American Decoration, A Sense of Place

Thomas Jayne, author, historian, preservationist, decorator and friend, has written a remarkable new book, AMERICAN DECORATION, A SENSE OF PLACE published by The Monacelli Press. Thomas’ interest in architecture and decoration started with his family’s legacy of houses that ranged from the Plymouth colony to a Vermont tavern, an Italianate Villa in Iowa and a California Craftsman style bungalow amongst others. Even the re-decoration of his boyhood room by painting the walls White House red. His family’s migration across a broad swath of the country and his own sense of history have informed Thomas’s’ body of work.

I am honored to be the recipient of a boxed, numbered and signed copy of Suzanne Lovell’s new book ARTISTIC INTERIORS: Designing with Fine Art Collections published by Stewart Tabori & Chang. Suzanne is an architect, interior designer and the principal of Chicago-based Suzanne Lovell, Inc. Her work is familiar to readers of Architectural Digest, House Beautiful and Veranda.

Travel: The Octagon House

Last week I accompanied Kathleen Brennan, a Waterworks sales consultant, to Dobbs Ferry, NY.  At the end of our visit to Steven Tilley Architects, she offered to show me a house that I would love and probably want to write about. It was the incredible Armour-Stiner House in Irvingington-on-Hudson, NY; an eight sided, domed, colonnaded house shaped like a Roman temple.  It has all of those architectural attributes and it is painted pink as well!
