I am frequently asked to describe my personal bath. I always say that my house and bath look much like me; classic, tailored and neutral. So it was most auspicious when Newell Turner asked if House Beautiful could feature my bath in the “Bath of the Month” column.    I was delighted to oblige.

I always worry that not enough emphasis is placed on the choice of grout color for either ceramic tile or stone. Grout choice is a key element to affect the final outcome of an installation. And not incidentally, it acts as a moisture barrier so that water does not seep behind the tiles creating a mold situation or damage the ceiling below. So, it is very important that the grout choice not be left to the contractor; it is a choice to be made thoughtfully and long before the tile is installed.

I am asked all the time the best way to lay out a shower. There is really no “best” way. The design and layout are a function of personal preferences, budget, wall and door placement in the shower and valve selection. There are two things that are a must in my opinion: a hand shower and a place for soap and shampoo.

Those of you who know me, know that I love ceramic tile. It is the tactile experience of the material that is most appealing. It feels smooth and silky on its glazed face and unfinished on the back where only the raw fired clay is visible until installed. Handmade ceramic tile can be refined and elegant or chunky and casual on white or red clay bodies. The choices you make influence the design direction and the visual scale and balance of the space.
