I am always looking for special objects and accessories to personalize the bath. While orchids are beautiful and I love them, they have become the ubiquitous “go to” to humanize a space. So I wanted to share some ideas that I found at one of my favorite shops in New Preston, CT, PERGOLA. Since 2005 it has been located a tiny space with an extraordinary waterfall garden in their back yard decorated with rustic benches, planted containers and aged stone garden elements.

I thought I would write this post as soon as I returned home. In retrospect, I am am happy to have had the time to think about my trip (certainly on my bucket list of places to go and things to see), the intensity of the place situated on the edge of the Sahara desert, the ancient medina with its snake charmers, the saturated colors and the architecture influenced by a complex history.

New York City designer Philip Gorrivan was kind enough to share this photo with me.  It is a bath he designed for a NYC client who wanted a classic and timeless space that was practical as well as beautiful. He chose to install two single washstands with marble slabs fabricated with traditional ogee edges. The functionality becomes apparent with the installation of a small piece of furniture with a bank of drawers providing extra space to store bath sundries out of sight. I love all of the black accents from the border on the towels to the black crown molding. The scale is right and the materials beautifully layered.

Andrew Skurman, the award winning San Francisco and Paris based architect, specializes in designing classical houses. This was not always the case. Early in his career, Andy worked with I.M.Pei and Partners designing office towers, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill where he learned to be in charge of large commercial projects and interact with clients and finally on to Gensler as a studio director. None of these prestigious firms created the Georgian country houses, French Chateaux or Mediterranean villas that Andrew Skurman Architects is known for today.
