I love this casual kitchen by Steven Sclaroff in the April issue of House Beautiful. It is a “right” size (one of my trends for 2012), informal, working kitchen.  And, it is practical in every sense; dishes, glasses and pots are within easy reach.

This week on my trip to Atlanta I met designer Smith Hanes.  He is the talent behind Atlanta’s hottest restaurant, OPTIMIST. The space is fabulous; open, modern, relaxed with an industrial and vintage twist. High ceilings, warm wood, linen curtains and layered textures make this grand space warm and friendly. In addition, Smith has created a divine bar where hanging out with friends, eating oysters and having a drink is a wonderful experience.

For a number of years, Thomas Jayne and Richmond Ellis have organized an unusual Thanksgiving celebration in Central Park. A gathering of friends, now about 50, assemble at the Pilgrim statue in the park to lay a wreath of corn. They read a description of the first Thanksgiving written by Edward Winslow in 1621. This coming together celebrates our collective bounty and remembers the sacrifices made by so many that have allowed us to be so blessed.

This is a well thought out, appealing vignette. The raised panel vanity style is familiar but the combination of a great shade of gray, clear crystal knobs that become invisible, the Calcatta stone slab with its light gray and gold veins and tall backsplash, and the personal accessories make this so pleasant. However, the main ingredient is the gold leaf decorative French mirror accompanied by a pair of very simple lights. This is a great example how an ordinary space can be transformed with just one incredible object.
