Halloween is coming.  I thought I would join the spirit of the holiday with spooky, dark and dramatic spaces. Dark walls, dark cabinets, dark floors and dark furniture add a slightly masculine and mysterious ambience to the spaces pictured.  But, there is also sophistication and elegance. Clearly, these spaces need a new vocabulary. Fresh, youthful, spirited are not amongst them. They can be described as moody, soulful, fashionable and strong while still being luxurious.

Last week I attended the awards celebration of New England Chapter Institute of Classical Architecture and Art held at the State House in Boston, a fabulous Charles Bulfinch building built in 1798 with later additions. It is sited close to the summit of the south side of Beacon Hill overlooking Boston Common and the Back Bay. Bulfinch was not only the architect of the building for the seat of government, but also a public-minded citizen and selectman. At its completion, it was proclaimed one of the more magnificent buildings in the country.

There are many elements that give a bath a ‘rustic’ composition. The first one that comes to mind is the use of Unlacquered Brassfittings with the worn and alluring appeal of a finish that shows its age gracefully. The warmth of yellow brass that is tinged with hints of green or brown delivers a soft and friendly patina.
