I am always looking for special objects and accessories to personalize the bath. While orchids are beautiful and I love them, they have become the ubiquitous “go to” to humanize a space. So I wanted to share some ideas that I found at one of my favorite shops in New Preston, CT, PERGOLA. Since 2005 it has been located a tiny space with an extraordinary waterfall garden in their back yard decorated with rustic benches, planted containers and aged stone garden elements.

I am presenting this photograph of a stone foyer floor clad in Silver Cloud travertine to point out some attributes of stone and its remarkable qualities originating from the bedrock of the earth.  I chose this picture as an illustration because it is on the aggressive end of the variation spectrum.  It is an Italian material from a small family owned quarry.

Last week I was in Palm Beach and noticed some wonderful black and white art in the windows of empty storefronts. It turns out the sketches were created by my friend, Ray Gindroz, architect, artist, new urbanist and principal emeritus of Urban Design Associates of Pittsburgh. A little further exploration, led me to a small folio Ray created for Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach in 2007. It was fun to look at the sketches and try to find the actual sites, a bit like a scavenger hunt.
