The second week of May has evolved into “Design Week” in New York. In addition to the opening of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House and Collective Design, there is the major trade show International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). Originally it was a platform for contemporary furniture, rugs, lighting, fabrics, wallpaper and objects. Today, it has migrated to a complete range for luxury interiors now including surfaces, bath, kitchen, hardware and an even inspiring section devoted to student work.

Little round mesh-mounted porcelain tiles–called Penny Tile–are both traditional and modern. They are a familiar form from ’30s-era baths, when little black daisy designs were installed in a bed of white. The look was seen in both residential and commercial installations, often partnered with 3 x 6 white subway tile.

Wall-mounted and freestanding accessories are the final choices to be made when completing a bath. These important functional elements often are left out of the original quote — you think you’ll get back to the showroom and select them later, but it doesn’t quite happen. That means that random last-minute selections are made without completely thinking them through, and suddenly those fabulous new towels have no place go other than the floor.

Nothing about a kitchen renovation is exactly quick. Planning takes time. Selecting products thoughtfully takes time. Assembling and checking the order takes time, and is as essential as hiring the contractor. Interviews need to be scheduled, contracts reviewed and a project plan created.
