In mid-March I had a fabulous visit to the Thornwillow Press in Newburgh, New York. This incredible facility, owned by Luke Pontifell and his lovely Swiss wife, Savine, is tucked away on a side street in several non descript brick buildings.  However, once inside the door (a little hard to find), one is immediately confronted with an extraordinary  array of printing equipment most of which is more than 50 years old and none of it digital.

Who doesn’t dream of a house at the beach? One immediately thinks of cool breezes, warm sand, fresh color, casual living, and relaxing on the shore under an umbrella — and finally, a delicious warm bath before dinner. Sounds divine to me.

Though they’re used in the bath today, exposed thermostatic shower systems were originally designed for factories where precise temperatures were needed for certain manufacturing processes. Of course, these older models were not cloaked in beautiful nickel-plated covers or elegant engraving. Instead, the valves were marked with settings and the operating system was easily managed with gloved hands or even elbows.

I remember the first time we used dark grout as a design statement at Waterworks. Peter Sallick thought the columns in our 58th Street showroom should look like old New York, referencing the subways as an example. We loved the look; it emphasized the grid and gave the space dimension. It made the columns, which could easily have been a disaster, more integrated in to our design process as well as a focal part of the architecture.
