Recently, when looking at potential updates to my house with a critical eye, I realized that over time we had installed way too many recessed lights. There were too many holes in the ceilings and I thought there had to be a more attractive and up-to-date way to light my rooms. I envisioned an intimate and experiential type of light encased in a beautifully crafted frame or glass. Enter my new project.

Earlier in the month, I wrote about my excitement for my new book, The Perfect Bath. While the process of designing and executing a great bath can be demanding, dare I say that the book itself—my experience and insight coupled with advice from top experts and stunning images—is quite an enjoyable read.

The second week of May has evolved into “Design Week” in New York. In addition to the opening of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House and Collective Design, there is the major trade show International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). Originally it was a platform for contemporary furniture, rugs, lighting, fabrics, wallpaper and objects. Today, it has migrated to a complete range for luxury interiors now including surfaces, bath, kitchen, hardware and an even inspiring section devoted to student work.

Little round mesh-mounted porcelain tiles–called Penny Tile–are both traditional and modern. They are a familiar form from ’30s-era baths, when little black daisy designs were installed in a bed of white. The look was seen in both residential and commercial installations, often partnered with 3 x 6 white subway tile.
